Huawei donates $200,000 to support PLDT, Smart CSR initiatives

Chinese tech giant Huawei has donated $200,000, or about P10.11 million, to PLDT Smart Foundation (PSF) to help fund the corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs of PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications Inc. The CSR initiatives for funding to be determined by both PSF and Huawei will include disaster response, rehabilitation and recovery, promotion and enhancement of education in the country, environmental conservation, and the use of technology in health services. “I would like to thank Huawei for the $200,000 donation to PSF, which will go a long way in supporting our CSR programs like education, disaster relief, environment, telehealth, and many more,” PSF chairman Manuel V. Huawei Philippines continues to develop, build and strengthen the local ICT talent ecosystem as it welcomes 15 new partner universities and colleges to Huawei ICT Academy. PH telcos conduct successful technical interoperability tests of MNP

The Philippines’ major Mobile Network Operators (MNO) namely DITO, Globe and Smart Communications are one with the government in the implementation of the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) Act and through their joint venture company, Telecommunications Connectivity Inc. (TCI), the three telcos successfully concluded the initial tests of their technical capabilities and interoperability July 14. The joint effort will soon allow customers the option to keep their mobile numbers permanently, even when they change network providers or switch subscriptions. Against the backdrop of the ongoing pandemic, the MNOs said the outcome of these initial technical tests is ‘within expectations’. 'Online Filipino workers' and the growth of the PH digital gig economy

The Philippines’ economic growth continues to take a hit as the country grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic in one of the longest lockdowns in the world. A July report from Moody’s Analytics tapered its growth forecast for the Philippines, predicting its gross domestic product (GDP) to grow by 4.9 percent at the end of the year compared to its 5.3 percent estimate in May. This number is significantly lower than the 6 to 7 percent growth targeted by the Philippine government for 2021. While larger companies in the Philippines see their revenues gradually bounce back, the slow easing of restrictions and low GDP growth are taking more of a toll on Filipino workers. The Philippine Statistics Authority reported that unemployment in the Philippines rose up to 8.7 percent in April 2021, significantly higher than the 7.1 percent reported the previous month.
